The Parish Lectors Guild is a group or association within a Catholic parish composed of individuals who are trained and committed to proclaiming the Word of God during liturgical celebrations, especially at Mass.
Meaning of “Guild” in This Context:
Here, guild means a formal fellowship or organization of lectors who:

1. Nature of the Ministry
The Lector is a lay minister entrusted with the proclamation of the Word of God during liturgical celebrations, especially the Mass. This ministry is not simply a reading task—it is a spiritual and liturgical function that requires faith, preparation, and reverence.
2. Qualifications
To become a Lector, the candidate must:

Be a baptized and confirmed Catholic in good standing.

Have received proper training and commissioning.

Be able to proclaim the Word clearly, audibly, and reverently.

Be of good moral character and active in parish life.
-
Be at least 15 years old (or as allowed by diocesan norms).
3. Responsibilities of a Lector

Proclaim the First or Second Reading at Mass.

Lead the Prayers of the Faithful when assigned.

Participate in rehearsals and spiritual formations.

Arrive at least 20 minutes before Mass to pray, review the reading, and check the microphone and Lectionary.

Dress appropriately and modestly.

Attend scheduled meetings and trainings.
4. Code of Conduct

Maintain a prayerful and reverent attitude at all times.

Refrain from accepting roles if not spiritually or emotionally prepared.

Never proclaim if under the influence of alcohol or in a state of grave sin.

Do not engage in gossip, division, or political rivalry within the ministry.

Respect all fellow ministers, and follow instructions from coordinators or clergy.
5. Liturgical Norms

Readings must be proclaimed from the Lectionary only—never printed sheets or gadgets.

The Word of God is proclaimed, not dramatized—avoid excessive emotion or gestures.

Silence must be observed before and after the reading.
-
Bow to the altar before and after your reading, not the congregation.
6. Formation and Commissioning

All lectors must undergo initial training and liturgical formation.

They must be formally commissioned by the parish priest, usually on Bible Sunday or the Feast of St. Jerome.

Ongoing formation shall be required at least twice a year.
7. Grounds for Suspension or Dismissal
A lector may be suspended or removed for:

Persistent tardiness or absenteeism without valid reason.

Scandalous public behavior.

Disobedience or disrespect to liturgical guidelines or superiors.

Refusal to undergo formation or participate in community life.
8. Dress Code

Modest and dignified attire is expected.

Avoid flashy, tight, sleeveless, or revealing clothes.

For major feasts or solemnities, formal wear or ministry vestment (if applicable) may be required.
